XDD, LLC is part of the team that recently won a research grant from the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP), an interagency environmental science and technology initiative administered by the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Dr. Brant Smith, a project manager at XDD, will be a co-principal investigator on a team that is lead by Dr. Kevin Gardner from the University of New Hampshire and includes Dr. Ryan Fimmen of Geosyntec Consultants, Dr. Heather Rectanus, Steve Rosansky and Deepti Krishnan Nair from Battelle, and Michael Singletary and Tanwir Chaudhry of the U.S. Navy. Their research will evaluate the long term impacts to groundwater quality following the application of in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) with a particular focus on metals mobilization.

The primary tasks of the research effort include:

• Determining the mechanistic cause and modeling of metals mobilization for different ISCO technologies (permanganate, persulfate, and hydrogen peroxide).
• Evaluating the factors that contribute to the return of a site to baseline conditions and the fate of groundwater impacts as they migrate downgradient of an ISCO target area.
• Assessing possible changes to how ISCO is applied that may mitigate the mobilization of metals.
• Injecting a single reagent solution that both initiates an ISCO/ISCR reaction and is intended to stimulate ISB;
